My bank balance in the app doesn't match my real bank

This is the most common support question we get, and it's almost always one of four things. Work through them in order.

1. Check the date range of your last import

Open your last CSV import and confirm what date range it actually covered. Even a gap of a few days between imports means transactions are simply missing from the app, not wrong, just not there yet. Export a fresh CSV covering right up to today and import it.

2. Look for a duplicate

Search around the discrepancy amount. A transaction imported twice, common when CSV exports overlap, inflates or deflates the balance by exactly that amount. Found one? Delete the duplicate and keep the original.

3. Look for a miscategorized transfer

Moving money between your own accounts, chequing to savings, say, should be marked as a transfer, not income or an expense. Get this wrong and it throws off both accounts' running balances while also inflating your P&L. Search for large, round-number transactions around your typical transfer amounts.

4. Check for a pending transaction

Your bank's displayed balance sometimes includes holds or pending items that haven't posted yet, or excludes something that has posted on the bank's end but wasn't in your CSV export yet. Compare against your bank's posted balance rather than the "available balance" for an apples-to-apples comparison.

Still not matching?

Narrow it down with a binary search instead of scanning everything at once:

  1. Check the balance as of one month ago. Matches? The problem's in the most recent month, so narrow further from there.
  2. Doesn't match a month ago either? Go back another month and repeat until you find the point where it last lined up. The discrepancy happened somewhere between that point and the next.

That turns "somewhere in a year of transactions" into "somewhere in these two weeks" after about four checks.

Prevention

Reconciling monthly as part of a close routine means you're always searching a month of transactions for a discrepancy, never a full year.
