Questions people actually ask

Is GBooks Air really free?

Yes, all the way through. It's a free bookkeeping app for Canadian small businesses and solopreneurs — no subscription, no credit card on file, no paid tier holding the core features hostage.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Open the app and it sets up a company file in your browser's local storage. No sign-up, no email address, no password to remember.

Where does my data actually live?

In your browser's local database (IndexedDB), on your device. There's no server storing your books anywhere — the full explanation is on the security & privacy page.

What happens if I switch computers or browsers?

Your data doesn't automatically follow you. It belongs to that specific browser on that specific device. Make an encrypted backup and restore it wherever you're moving to.

Which provinces and territories does it cover?

All 13 — GST-only provinces and territories, HST provinces, the GST+PST provinces (BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba), and Quebec's GST+QST — with current CRA rates baked in.

Can I use this for a corporation, not just a sole proprietorship?

Yes. Set your fiscal year end in Settings to match your corporation's, and the chart of accounts and reports work either way. The incorporation estimator is also worth a look if you're weighing whether to incorporate at all.

Does it track GST/HST input tax credits?

It does. Mark the tax on a purchase and GBooks Air keeps your input tax credits separate from tax collected, ready to go when you file. More detail in Sales tax in depth.

Is the receipt scanning any good?

It's built on the Tesseract OCR engine and runs entirely on your device. Accuracy comes down to photo quality more than anything else — see our tips for cleaner reads. Either way, you confirm or correct the fields before anything saves.

How many transactions can it hold?

Up to 20,000 in the active file, which covers years of activity for most small businesses. The year-end archive lets you seal off completed years to free up room while keeping them fully accessible.

What about the stuff my accountant normally handles?

GBooks Air is a bookkeeping tool, not a replacement for actual tax advice. GSH Financial offers full accounting and advisory services alongside it — reach out at support@gshfinancial.com.

Can I get my data out if I ever stop using it?

Yes. An encrypted backup contains your entire company file, and reports plus the Receipt Vault export as ordinary PDF and ZIP files you can keep or hand off to something else.

Is there a mobile app?

GBooks Air runs fine in a mobile browser, which is handy for snapping a receipt on the go. Invoicing and the bigger reports are more comfortable with a real screen in front of you.

Ready to try it?

No sign-up needed. Just open the app.
